1984 Dialectic Journals

"War is Peace"

The phrase " War is Peace" which used as propaganda to support the Big Brother's war with Eurasia in the story, 1984 means that without us going to war with another country you wouldn't live in peace where you live right now. If we didn't go to war with them, they would attack where you live and make your life not so peaceful anymore. So in other words, the phrase means that we are holding them back by going to war against them so that you could live in peace. Obviously, people want to live the same peaceful lives they go through everyday instead of living in a war zone while being in constant fear thus causes people to support the goverment, their war, and hate the enemy. Everything that Big Brother wants the people to do.

In the real world of today, this phrase of "War is Peace" can be compared to one of the arguments made by the Bush Administration and Bush supports to why we are at war with many Middle Eastern countries which contain many radical Muslim terrorist organizations. They say if we don't attack them now, will do even more attacks on American soil. In other words they are saying that we will live in terror if we don't attack them now.

"Ignorance is Strength."

This phrase means that less you know, the better. To some point this can positive because if someone doesn't know certain things they wouldn't worry or panic as much. However in the case of 1984, the phrase is saying that the less public knows, the more power or strength the government has over the people. Due to the people not knowing that much, government can easily manipulate the people in supporting their cause such as their war with another country and hating the country that they are at war with. Also the less people know, the least likely they have chance of thinking of overthrowing you.

Examples in the real world of both meanings of the phrase being used include the U.S government not telling the people of certain things that they know about and how the U.S government rallied the American people for them starting a war in the Middle East after 9/11.

The U.S government has kept many secrets from the American people such as their knowledge of UFOs, assassinations, scientific experiments, and many other things that the people think that they should know. The U.S government probably doesn't want us to know about these things because they don't want us to be frighten or panic. However this is hypocritical because after 9/11, the government and companies tried to strike fear in the hearts of Americans because economical opportunities and that it would help them hate the enemy that the government is fighting against thus causing them to support their war.

Quotes from Sidhaartha

1. " Far is such a thought from my mind, I wish that I shall all stay with teachings, that they shall reach their goal!"

He saying that try not to think or worry about the past or future, but your mind into the present. He also means to focus on your problems and concerns that are happening now. By doing that you will reach your goals.

I can put this teaching into my life by not worrying or thinking about the future but worry about what is happening now and figure out how to solve that problem I'm worried about in that time period.

2. " I want to learn from myself , want to be my student, want to get to know myself, the secret of Siddlhartha."

He is saying that he wants to know more about himself from himself instead of a teacher saying what he is. He wants to know why he acts certain ways, why does he do certain things, and what is he as a person.

I can put this teaching into my life by questioning my negative actions, think for moments why I do certain things, and try to figure out through my daily actions what kind of person I am.

3. " Siddhartha felt his blood heating up, and since in this in this movement he had to think of his dream again, he blend slightly down the woman and kissed with his lips the brown nipple of her breast. Looking up, he saw her face smiling full of lust and her eyes, with contracted pupils, begging with desire. Siddhartha also felt desire and felt the source of his sexuality moving; but since he had never touched a woman before, he hesitated for a moment, while his hands were prepared to reach out for her, And in this moment he heard, shuddering with awe, the voice if his innermost self, and this voice said No. Then, all charms disappeared from the young woman's smiling face, he longer saw anything else but the damp glance of a female animal in the heat."

The lesson in this paragraph from Siddhartha is to resist temptation or lust over negative feelings or thoughts such as violence, greed, things you need for your own pleasure, and in this case, sex. Also you can say this paragraph has another lesson as well. The lesson being think before your actions, think of the consequences as well as the benefits and decide which are more important. For example, the benefits of smoking are a brief sense of pleasure while the consequences are life lasting heath problems. Which would you rather have?

Some ways, I could put the lesson of this paragraph into my life is think before my actions. When encountered a situation where you must decide over two or more things, think of the benefits and consequences of each thing and see which will be the best choice due to have better benefits and less consequences by using your conscience as well as common sense. Another thing is try to avoid temptation of things you don't really need.

4. " You aren't satisfied with Siddhartha as he is, with oil in his hair, but without clothes, without shoes, without money?"

The point Siddhartha is trying to make I think is that no matter how much you please someone, some people will never be satisfied with you due to their nature such as them being stubborn, you aren't like them, or not liking you who you are. The best you can is try to please them the best you can but in the end failing or leave them to find people who actually appreciate you.
A way I can bring this advice in my life is by being myself when I'm around people instead of pretending to be someone else. When the people who pretended to be find out that you are really not like them, they will leave. Another thing I can do to follow this advice is to find and hang out with frinds who actually like me for who I am.

5. " Remember my dear, Not eternal is the world of appearances, not eternal, anything but eternal are our garments and the style of your hair, and our hair and bodies themselves."

Siddhartha is saying that things in this world that you adore or consider important to you in this life such as clothes, movies, T.V, video games, and books won't matter in the after life. Those things won't be with you forever nor will you consider them important to you all throughout your life. Another thing that he is saying is that there are more important things in life then the kids of clothes you wear, what's popular, or what you should look like.

Some ways that I could follow this teaching is to try not to put things that are not really important or will have a huge effect on my life in the backseat of things that are actually important such family, school, health, and even yourself.

6. " The enchantment, which had happened inside of him in his sleep and by means of the Om, was this very thing that he loved everything, that he was full of joyful love for everything he saw. And it was this very thing, so it seemed to him now, which had been his sickness before, that he was not able to love anybody or anything."

In this part of Siddhartha, Siddhartha is saying he has finally learned from his mistakes from past lives. This passage can also be looked at in a different view, that love is the key to all happiness not material things like clothes, video games, movies, and other sources of personal pleasure. When he doesn't mean love in a sexual way but love by showing compassion, peace and kindness towards others. This kind of love is the heart of many religions and philosophies.

I can put this in my life my simply showing love, compassion, respect, and caring to all living things. Though it may sound simple, it isn't. I might even break it several times by accident. However, I must try because it won't just benfit me, it will also benfit others as well.

Reflection on Jin Jingzhi interview.

Dear Jin Jingzhi,
I found your interview to be quite interesting due to myself reading an actual account of a person who actually lived through an historical event such as Mao's rise to power as well as the Cultural Revolution and not just reading a history book. I think you still should've have moved out of China for the well being of your husband due to the fact many immigrants move into a new country for the similar reasons like yours and they don't have any family in that country. However I can understand your argument about not leaving the country due to you having five children because it would have been extremely difficult to handle them when going from one country to another.
I do have several questions regarding your thoughts on your life during the period in China's history that you lived through as well as questions about the events in your life that you mentioned.

• Do you think Mao Zedong deserves to be recognized as such a heroic figure despite the horrible things that he did that you experienced first hand?
• What were your feelings when your husband was sent to prison?
• Due to the Red Guards being made mostly of youth, did your children ever want or asked to join the Red Guards?
As I said before, your interview was very interesting. However I was wondering what your emotions were on these things such as your husband going to prison and when the Red Guards were accusing you as well as your husband of being anti-revolutionary?
Sincerely,
Carrick Esquivel

Reflection on MUN

I really enjoyed MUN due to the fact that I was talking with other people about solving the worlds' problems who actually cared and knew what I was talking about. I really enjoy debating with other people as well as try to convince them to my cause. I also enjoyed trying to creative as well as work with other people on solutions to world problems that all of the countries that we are representing can agree upon. Due to me knowing a lot on the variety of topics that we discussed, I really shined during MUN.

However there was some negative things in MUN as well. One of the negative things is that it seems that almost everyone no matter what the country that they are representing beliefs are on the problem we are trying to solve join a group due to their own personal beliefs and not the country they are representing, the group being the biggest, or just because the "smart" people are there.

Another reason is that the people seem to forget that the when we are debating, we are defending our country's point of view not ours. A experience that happened to me was when we were debating on child soldiers and my country, Libya supported child soldiers. I tried to tell why my country might support child soldiers but the person who represented Canada thought I was expressing my personal opinion and personally attacked me while trying to demonized me to other representatives when she could have listened to what I saying. Not to mention because I sat next to her, every time I did a stuttered, couldn't explain something in words, or pronounced something wrong, she corrected me in a stubborn manner.

However despite all of this, I really enjoyed MUN but I didn't enjoy to point where I would actually want to join MUN due to the fact there are other things I want t o do more then that as an after school activity. One thing that MUN did help me realize that I need to practice on speaking clearly so that people can understand me better.
